My first published piece of writing was in Young Times (the youth magazine of Khaleej Times) way back in 1993, when I was just 12. From there, I went to contribute regularly to Young World (the children’s supplement for Dawn Newspaper in Pakistan) and as I got older, the “grown up” sections of the same newspaper: Images and Tuesday Review.
While in Pakistan, I did freelance writing for almost all of the major magazines including Herald, Spider, She, Women’s Own, Men’s Club, TV Times, MAG weekly etc.
Since moving to Dubai, I have moved on to working fulltime in Corporate Communications (with the odd editorial job here and there) but have continued writing freelance for various publications.
My professional trajectory has seen me become a corporate communications professional specialized in creating a sound research based internal communications strategy, and developing and implementing a long-term plan for sustained and successful across the board and multichanne communications that ensure employee engagement in line with organizational goals. My achievements include setting up and running internal communications at entities ranging from small private companies to multinationals with over 15000 employees in 11 countries.
Over the years, I have continued to work with prominent magazines such as Emirates Woman, Arabian Woman, Arabian Man, Technomania, Hospitality etc. freelance and in various editorial positions. For over four years, I also single-handedly produced Technomania – a Dubai-based consumer technology magazine, as a freelance project
I have experience in writing/ reporting/ editing all kinds of topics .. . from travel and leisure to beauty and healthcare, technology and gadgets to motoring and sports. I am also a photographer, so I can take pictures to supplement all my work. You can see some of my photography here.
Currently, the majority of my writing is for The National newspaper, where I write mostly about Bollywood and a bit about what’s happening in the city. You can go on over to my dedicated page on the newspaper’s website to read some of my writing.
I also have a weekly column in the Arts & Life section of the paper. Published every Tuesday, it is called ’Desi Girl’ and is a light-hearted discourse of a Desi Girl living in Dubai.
